Movement Menu eZine - April 2011

Welcome image
    Photo: Joy Coakley

Springtime is in full swing even in the colder parts of the country, and if you are like most of us, not only is it spring cleaning time, it's time to get outside and move! There's no better time of the year to try out a new class or dance, sign up for a workshop, or make plans for a training. And somewhere along the way find some time to open up the calendar and start making plans for summer! We have an exciting week at Omega on tap in early June, see the listing for the Move Mix Conference below. And we're putting the finishing touches on the Summer Travel issue hitting the streets in June, and have a few remaining slots left to promote your practice, product or event, so if we can help you serve your needs please contact us by next Monday the 18th. We trust that you are using movement to appreciate more of your moments, and thank you for sharing these newsletters and your copies of the magazine with your dancing community far and wide. ~M.M.

All the best from the Conscious Dancer Team!

Yoga Toes - These silicone gooey healers are essential for spreading the naked ball of the feet into a fan of delight. Toes are separated and relived from all the stresses we put on these supportive base of our body - our feet are the hands that touch the earth and the toes may feel freedom and allow espression in the roots of our being this spring. We salute and celebrate the roots of our body - I have healed my plantar faciatis through barefoot dance and conscious movement and healed my toe base from becoming my family bunion through the use of Yoga Toes in my rest. Strengthening the feet through barefoot dance and stretching the feet through Yoga Toes and conscious LOVE in every inch of my body's structure - honor and love those feet -Liz Mac

Move Mix Conference:
The Roots and Shoots of Conscious Dance

Move Mix Conference: The Roots and Shoots of Conscious Dance

Where: The Omega Institute, Rhinebeck, NY.
When: June 5–10

Conscious Dancer Magazine invites you to our first ever "co-laboratory!" Five diverse days of music, dance, panel discussions, workshops, and more. Are you curious about mind, movement, and consciousness? You might think that knowing a modality is all it takes to achieve transformation. Or that things like post-workshop burnout and and facilitator fatigue are inevitable parts of the territory. But really, a lack of easy tools to clear metaphysical blockages can be what gets in the way of balanced integration. If you just learn some simple somatic processes using your hands and physical body, then you may be more grounded and centered in the long run, with a new key for upshifting awareness that you can easily share with others.

Integration is the theme with Wow Process somatic meditations, (a form of epigenetic medicine), led by the Rev. Louisa Dyer MA woven through nine modalities in five days. Opening night keynote address from Gabrielle Roth; 5Rhythms moving meditation with Jonathan Horan; LivingDance somatic movement with live music facilitated by Kinections director Danielle Fraenkel Ph.D., BC-DMT, LMHC; blindfolded Dance of Liberation with Parashakti; the integral brain-balancing TaKeTiNa rhythm process led by Elaine Fong; KiVo founder Lis Addison shares the kinetic voice and additional classes in Nia and Zumba. Darrell Duane, host ofCamp Contact at Burning Man, lead classes and offers a 30FT dome. This is your opportunity to collaborate with the founders of several different modalities, and discover the complementary benefits of each.

Move Mix is pleased to be sharing the spectacular Omega campus for the week with the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers, noted nutritionist Jena la Flamme, and famed nondual philosopher Rupert Spira. We are hosting two open events — an outdoor interactive performance of Anna Halprin's Planetary Dance led by Elisabeth Osgood-Cambell, and an ecstatic Journeydance with Toni Bergins and DJ Root. Prepare to cross-pollinate with movers and shakers from across the land, and return home with new integration techniques to share. We invite you to meet in the co-laboratory of Omega in June, and expand the meaning of "movement for a better world!"

When: Pure Yoga East - New York, NY

You are the Prayer: your body, your movement, your breath. You are the Goddess: your passion, your emotions, your sensual heart. You are the Warrior: your power, your intentions, your life's journey.

JourneyDance™ will move you through deep, personal exploration into a loving, intimate relationship with body, mind, and source energy. In a shamanic style, Toni carries us through an intentional and seamless flow of guided ritual and free expression. We embody our physical temple, learn Toni's Embodiment Series of release technique exercises and powerful core connections. We unleash animal energies and awaken our sensuality. We move in waves, diving into our ocean of emotion, expressing with sound.

We dance our funky, playful self in community, and hold a vibration of joy! We access our power of release, purge, and sweat. We connect with the inner shaman to clear the cluttered mind, making space for the abundance of joy available to us. We explore the inner realms of our hearts, listening deeply. We engage in Toni's Heart Series of partner and group connection, opening energy awareness. We dance as source and ride our pranic flow. We move from our feelings, senses and intuition, opening to our highest vibration in a community prayer dance.

A One-Day Symposium:
The Poetic Body: Integrating Somatic Psychology and the Expressive Arts

A One-Day Symposium: The Poetic Body: Integrating Somatic Psychology and the Expressive Arts

Where: Meridian University, Petaluma, CA
When: Saturday, May 21, 2011. 10am - 5pm

Somatic Psychology and Expressive Arts are blessed with rich histories and vibrant professional communities. Both approaches rely on accessing untapped sources of implicit knowledge to deepen our understanding of what it means to be human and to strengthen our capacity for change. Although both Somatic Psychology and the Expressive Arts work with the imagination, and have developed sophisticated tools for undertaking the profoundly important work of personal and cultural transformation, few opportunities for dialogue between these two communities currently exist.

This symposium is intended to be such an opportunity and to foster an ongoing exchange of ideas, practices, and inspirations. The day will feature practitioners in somatic psychology and expressive arts, as well as poets, artists, and movement practitioners. Presenters include: Natalie Rogers, Eleanor Criswell, Arianna Strozzi, Larry Robinson, Rae Johnson, Aftab Omer, Meagan Pugh, John Conger as well as others. Students, professionals, and individuals interested in exploring "The Poetic Body" are encouraged to attend.

The Equus Projects Summer Intensive:
"Dancing in Real Time and Exploring Choreographic Necessity"

The Equus Projects Summer Intensive: Dancing in Real Time and Exploring Choreographic Necessity

Where: Rhineback, NY
When: June 20-24, July 4-8

THE EQUUS PROJECTS is a NYC-based dance company established to create site-specific performance works that partner dancers with horses. Over the past 11 years, the company has performed and taught all over the country, using its human-equine explorations as the starting point to develop a unique interdisciplinary movement language. Its Summer Intensives provide a once-a-year opportunity for dancers to gain first-hand experience with the Equus Projects' studio process and its work with horses. For 2011, there are two five-day Intensives (June 20-24 or July 4-8). During each, dancers will focus on ways to move with horizontal stability, while staying grounded; making movement choices consciously and in the moment; and using horsemanship rules to create choreographic structures. Each session includes 15 hours of studio work in NYC and two days of hands-on training with horses in Rhinebeck, NY. Cost: $500. Enrollment limited to 10 dancers.
